"It's okay, JaeHwa, it's going to be okay, I swear," murmured DongHae as he held me tight.
"It's not, it's not...." I said, sobbing.
We were in the hospital, somewhere that I shouldn't have been anywhere near. My perfectly planned plan had turned out to be not so perfect after all. I was still picturing the last hour in my head.
I had called DongHae on my cellphone as soon as I could. "Come home now!" I had said before breaking down. He was back in 10 minutes, KyuHyun at his heels. He took one look at MinYoung and then called the ambulance before making KyuHyun take me downstairs.
"I want you to look like you're just a stranger. When the ambulance comes and takes her, you're passing by and you recognise her. That way you'll be with me and you can explain why you know her."
KyuHyun put his arm around me and said that everything was going to be ok. I caught sight of DongHae's face as we left. He didn't look very pleased with KyuHyun. HyunJae was speechless, but she didn't look panicked. We stayed downstairs as told, while KyuHyun went back up. We watched the ambulance drive up, then waited some more. When we saw DongHae rush out, we started walking towards them. The stretcher went past us and I looked at MinYoung's white face before screaming.
I was taken to the hospital for shock.
Once we were left alone in the cubicle almost identical to the one I had stayed in when I had my concussion, DongHae had pulled me to him.
"I'm so sorry JaeHwa," he said over and over again, but I knew that it wasn't his fault. I couldn't say anything to him though, I was too busy shaking and clinging to him. Eventually I calmed down enough to talk properly, or at least form some words in my mouth.
"Is... is she going to be okay?" I asked.
"The doctor said that she'll be fine, but she definitely won't be right for school tomorrow," he said grimly. "But you'll be, so don't think you're cutting school tomorrow."
"But what if word gets out that she did that?"
"I-"
I put my hand over his mouth before he could say anything else. I listened hard. "Where's my daughter?! I want to see her!" I heard someone exclaiming. I looked up at DongHae.
"My parents are here," I said miserably. He got off the bed and looked around. "You're going to have to go. Through the other cubicle. Go, quickly!"
He turned to go, but then came back and bent down so he was face to face with me. "Make sure you take care of yourself JaeHwa. I don't want you to worry about me. Okay?"
I nodded numbly, and he kissed me on the cheek before sliding into the other cubicle.
---
"Hey JaeHwa!" someone yelled as I entered school. I looked around, and the caught sight of JunSu and his gang hanging around a nearby tree. I said hi and meant to walk straight past when he caught up with me. "So how was your holiday?"
"It was... interesting."
"Cool, did you go anywhere?"
"No... did you?"
"Nowhere in particular, but I had fun." He spied some of his friends hanging around the lockers. "I'll catch up with you later huh?" He hurtled off. I walked over to my locker, feeling a bit tired. I opened it and was immediately greeted by DongHae's smiling face. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
"JaeHwaaaaa," said a voice behind me. I turned and found several girls standing behind me. It was the Super Junior fanclub in my school. I was dead. I prepared myself to run.
"Hello MinJee," I said, surprised at how calm my voice sounded.
"We hope you enjoyed your holidays hun," replied MinJee, the president of the club. She was also vice-president of the school and an avid EunHyuk lover. "We were wondering if you're still with the club?"
"Of course I am...! Why wouldn't I be?"
"No reason. We're just looking out for the newbies who joined in Term 1 to make sure they're not deserting us. Anyway. First meeting's on Thursday, as usual. We'll see you there." She turned and walked off, her personal entourage following her.
I felt relieved. I hadn't been found out yet. And no-one had a clue about MinYoung.
"I guess I should beware of MinJee, huh?" said HyunJae when we were in class.
"Why...? You haven't done anything to her. She doesn't even know you exist," I replied.
"She will if she does something crazy like hack into my email and check my inbox," she said evenly.
I stared at her. "Are you trying to tell me something..?"
She shook her head. "No. Just warning you about something."
At that moment the teacher came in.
I hoped for a heavy load of work.
And then I wished for a heavier load of homework.
---
A few weeks later, I was finishing off some maths homework and polishing up a speech for my history class when my phone rang. I didn't check it, assuming it would be DongHae or HyunJae.
"Hello...?"
"Hello JaeHwa sshi." The voice was unfamiliar, yet I felt like I'd heard it before.
"Uhh, who's calling?"
"It's KyuHyun."
"Oh, KyuHyun sshi! How are you? Sorry, I didn't recognize your voice." I sounded normal, but I was utterly dumbfounded. Why would KyuHyun be calling me...? Unless...
"Haha, that's alright JaeHwa sshi. Listen, I'm in your area, do you want to meet up with me?"
".... what?!"
"Just as friends, you know? Or are you busy with homework?"
"Uhh, I guess it's alright, I can spare a minute or two. Where are you?"
"Looking at your flat."
I rushed to my window, which was facing the street. I spied a tall figure standing across the street. He was looking up, and he was on the phone. He spied me and waved, a smile forming on his lips. I waved back and then said "How did you know where I lived...?"
"Sources." I could hear the smile in his voice. "So are you going to come down?"
"Uhh okay, but only for 5 minutes."
"5 minutes is all I have." He hung up.
I grabbed my jacket off the chair and went outside. "Omoni, I'm popping out for a few minutes. I need to get something from the stationary shop across the road." I left the flat before she could say anything, running across the road and pulling KyuHyun into the bookshop behind him.
"Are you even allowed to be here?" I said quietly as we browsed through the books like normal friends.
"Don't worry, I was asked to come here. I mean, not here in this bookshop but... around this place."
"Does DongHae know you're here?" I dropped a book and we both bent down to pick it up.
"Does DongHae hyung have to know?" he replied.
I didn't have an answer to that one. I didn't belong to DongHae. Yet I was worried about what he would think if it got back to him that I met up with KyuHyun. Sneakily, no less.
"I think there's something you should know JaeHwa sshi," said KyuHyun evenly. "That girl who tried to kill herself did it because of DongHae."
"But she didn't know him."
"How do you know?"
"He didn't... I mean... then..." I was actually out of explanations. I had no idea whether he knew her or not.
"You left, remember? How do you know what he did when you were gone?"
"KyuHyun sshi!" I nearly yelled out but stopped myself in time. "Why are you telling me this?!" I hissed furiously.
"Because you need to know that maybe he doesn't care for you like you think he does!" He whispered back. "Not like I do anyway," he added quietly after a pause.
I stood up. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "I have to go now, I've got a speech for tomorrow." I turned to leave.
"I'm sorry JaeHwa," he said, catching hold of my arm. "But we don't always have happy endings."
I shook myself free. "Just because you haven't had one doesn't mean they don't exist," I snapped. He looked wounded. I knew it hurt him, but I wanted him to hurt, which was insane. "Goodbye KyuHyun sshi."
"Goodbye JaeHwa sshi," he replied in a voice barely above a whisper.
I left the shop, and knew that his eyes had followed me until I entered the building.
