"Hey, JaeHwa sshi!" KyuHyun exclaimed as he opened the door. I wasn't expecting him to be back yet. "We weren't expecting you! Missed me that much, huh?" he smiled, ushering HyunJae and me into the flat. HyunJae looked a bit awed at me KyuHyun talking to me so casually.
"Haha, I don't think so KyuHyun sshi," I said. "This is my friend, HyunJae."
KyuHyun greeted her, then pulled me into the living room. I looked back at HyunJae and shrugged. She stepped in after me and shut the door. At that moment, EunHyuk and SiWon walked past.
"HyunJae sshi!" they both exclaimed, their eyes lighting up.
... why did SiWon look so excited...? Weird. But he looked adorable, so there was no harm in it, I guess. A door slammed and suddenly DongHae was next to me on the couch.
"Why're you all back so early?" I asked. "Shouldn't you be at SM...?"
"I guess you saw the newspaper huh?" EunHyuk said from his seat to the right of HyunJae. SiWon sat to her left.
"Looks like we're not the only ones," I replied. KyuHyun's face tensed for a minute, but then it was gone. The others were silent. I turned to face DongHae. "DongHae? Did something happen?"
He looked me squarely in the eye and said in an extremely calm voice, "No, nothing happened. SooMan hyung asked EunHyukkie, SiWonnie and I why we were with you. We told him that we took you to the hospital, nothing else. He asked why was I carrying you then. I said that you were unconcious."
"Oh, Thank God!" burst out HyunJae suddenly, and everyone turned to look at her. She blushed and hid behind EunHyuk, who burst out laughing.
"Then why are you back here?" I asked, and my face must have looked worried because KyuHyun smiled and said that nothing had happened.
"Don't worry JaeHwa, we didn't lose our jobs or anything. In fact, we're right in the middle of producing our new album... so we're too important to let go at this point."
"There's a new album? When's it coming out?" asked HyunJae, her face in O.O mode. It was so comical that I laughed.
"Sorry HyunJae sshi, that's classified information," replied DongHae, grinning.
"You still haven't answered my question DongHae," I said. I turned to HyunJae. "Keep the questions til later Hyun, I'm trying to extract some information here." She drew back and SiWon patted her shoulder sympathetically.
"SooMan hyung just said that we should stay in the house because reporters would surely be outside SM building..." he glanced at DongHae. "And so would the fan girls. It's alright because we've already practiced our parts, they're jsut briefing us on some stuff. We're not missing out on anything right now. KyuHyun's here because he said he felt sick. I don't know how true that is, since he's been racing with DongHae since we got back."
"Sorry SiWon, I'll give you a turn then, no need to complain," said DongHae.
"I guess we should be going then," I said, standing up. HyunJae looked crestfallen.
"But you just got here! Why don't you stay a while?" said KyuHyun, standing up too.
"No, we just wanted to check that I didn't get you into trouble," I replied. I turned, and someone caught my hand.
"Don't go yet JaeHwa," said DongHae, pouting. I looked down and found that he was hanging on to my hand. "I'm not gonna let you go. Anyway, I don't think that HyunJae sshi's ready to go yet." He nodded to the other sofa as I heard a shriek of laughter.
EunHyuk and SiWon were tickling HyunJae...! My mouth dropped open. What was going on?! I felt a bit freaked out. I watched my best friend rolling around the couch, trying to evade her 'attackers'. Suddenly, KyuHyun pulled me back on to the sofa. No way. I felt a bit sick. No matter how famous they were, HyunJae and I were still in the room alone with 4 guys.
I jumped off the couch and grabbed HyunJae's arm, hauling her off the couch.
"JaeHwa, what....?" I heard DongHae say, but I had already flung open the front door. I ran.
---
"JaeHwa, WHAT are you doing?!" exclaimed HyunJae, as I dragged her down the street. I stopped and let her go, turning to face her. I was breathing hard from running and from dragging a very resistant load behind me.
"HyunJae, just because they're Super Junior doesn't mean that they won't hurt you or something," I said. As I said it, I suddenly realised that I was scared. "No matter what, they're still guys past 20!"
"KyuHyun's only 19, JaeHwa! 2 years older than us! You were so rude, I can't believe that you did that! We should go back and apologize...!"
"You can go back if you want, but I'm not going."
"You're the one who wanted to go in the first place!"
"And I'm the one who wants to leave!"
"There, you've left, now I want to go back."
"JaeHwa! HyunJae!" That was an entirely different voice. HyunJae and I whipped around. I spied DongHae running up to us.
"You can stay, but I'm leaving," I hissed at HyunJae, a bit surprised at how angry I sounded.
"Oh yea, and where are you going? There isn't any bus around here."
"You're talking to a runner. Call you tomorrow."
I took off sprinting down the street. I heard HyunJae yell at me to stop but I wasn't stopping for anyone, not even her. I turned my head to look at them and found DongHae running after me. "JaeHwa!" he yelled. Adrenaline was pumping through my body, and my fear gave me more energy. I burst into a faster run and ran into the nearby shopping centre.
I stopped when I was sure that he wasn't following me anymore.
The shopping centre was too public, someone would surely recognize him. He was smart. I stayed in there, catching my breath and then went back out. He was gone.
I caught a bus home.
---
Don't ask me why I ran from DongHae like that. Maybe my brain wasn't working right. Maybe I was afraid of what they could do to us. Maybe it was both.
I'll never know.
After I washed up dishes from dinner, I turned on my laptop then flopped down on the bed. I was exhausted. I hadn't run like that in a while.
My cellphone rang, and I picked it up without bothering to check the number, thinking that it was HyunJae.
"JaeHwa....?"
I nearly dropped the phone in shock. It was DongHae.
"H... how did you get my number?!"
"Please don't get mad, but HyunJae gave it to me."
"HyunJae?! Aaargh, I'm never talking to her again."
"Are you being serious? I thought I was the funny one around here."
"You haven't been very funny."
"I know." There was a pause. "Sorry if we scared you, JaeHwa."
"You didn't scare me. You terrified me."
"I didn't know that we grew horns and forked tails."
"Seriously, it's not funny. What were you thinking? No wait, let me rephrase that. What were you thinking when you carried me to hospital? And then staying by my bedside?"
"I don't know. I didn't mean to, and EunHyuk and SiWon were trying to make me leave, but I felt like... responsible to you."
"Only because you tripped me up."
I heard him breathing hard and I wondered what he was doing. Working out? I felt like throwing the phone at the wall. Obviously I didn't mean anything to him. I bet HyunJae put him up to calling me.
"Goodbye DongHae. It was nice meeting you."
"Wait, don't put down the phone...!"
The doorbell rang. I went to open the door, still holding the phone to my ear.
"Why should I listen to you? I don't belong in your life, DongHae. I don't even know your first name."
I opened the door and this time, I dropped the phone.
"Ouch, that crash sounds louder when you're hearing it through a phone," said DongHae. "My first name is Lee, and you're wrong JaeHwa. You belong in my life."
He disconnected the call and stared at me.
